"Of Joe, long dead, who lives between five bells." A truly special, rich and bright, extremely well-balanced wine. A shining example of the very best that Australia has to offer, this beauty deserves a place of honor in your collection - right next to your best white Burgundies. Working with two local Geelong growers, we isolated small parcels of Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc to be harvested within a few days of each other. Almost equal quantities of each arrived at the winery, where they were whole-bunch pressed into 1000L cuves for primary ferment. Extended solids-contact and 100% completion of malolactic fermentation round out the main winemaker influences. The wine carries a beguiling combination of Chardonnay richness, with very high acid structure from the Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc, with the old-vine Semilion adding to the concentration. It’s powerful, rich and extremely bright. The name chosen for these wines comes from Slessor’s poem ‘Five Bells’ written in memory of the poet’s friend Joe Lynch, who drowned in Sydney Harbor in 1927. ‘Five Bells’ is a very complex poem, much deeper than its apparent subject matter; these wines from Between Five Bells with their emphasis on complexity rather than obvious fruit characters demand attention in the same way.
