Temperance Hill is a late-ripening organically farmed site in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. The grapes come from the older, self-rooted 'North' block which is believed to be Pommard clone. In 2008 we saw a ripeness unusual to this site and decided to do a 50% whole cluster fermentation. This fruit has a signature floral nose of violets and roses and lends fine silky tannins to the blend. The Winter’s Hill fruit comes from an older self-rooted block of the Pommard clone. It lends a rich Red Hills character to the mix. Left Coast Vineyard lies south of Rickreall off of the 99W. The biodynamically farmed 114 clone fruit is exuberant and bright cherry. The grapes were destemmed (except for 50% of the Temperance grapes) and cold soaked for 7-8 days. The small-lot fermentations were un-inoculated and punched daily by hand or foot. The must was gently pressed and sent to barrel after a short settling period. The wine was aged in neutral French cooperage for 18 months and racked twice before bottling on March 26th, 2010. This is the third Pinot noir release for Love & Squalor. Matt Berson, the winemaker/owner of Love & Squalor, began working in the Oregon wine industry in 2003, after being rudely ejected from his previous career in the restaurant industry. He was rescued and taught the rudiments and joys of winemaking by Patty Green of Patricia Green Cellars. Additionally, he has scurried in the cellars of Jimi Brooks (Brooks), Jay Somers (J. Christopher), Larry McKenna (Escarpment, NZ), and Erni Loosen (Dr. Loosen). He is currently the assistant winemaker for Brooks Handcrafted Wines in the Eola Hills.
